Research Guide for Graduate Nursing

 How to Search CINAHL

Try the CINAHL advanced search.

  • Type synonyms or terms related to the same concept into the same search box connected by OR. Type terms for different concepts in different search boxes, connected by AND.
  • If you get too many hits, try selecting "AB Abstract" from the "Select a Field" options.

  • Under the Refine Search tab, check off "Research article" to limit your search to articles reporting the results of original nursing research.  Check off "Peer Reviewed" to limit your search to journals that publish articles reviewed by peer researchers.
IT IS NOT RECOMMENDED THAT YOU CHECK OFF "LINKED FULL TEXT", AS THIS WILL ACTUALLY ELIMINATE FROM YOUR SEARCH MANY VALUABLE ARTICLES FROM OTHER FULL TEXT COLLECTIONS HELD BY FALVEY LIBRARY.  CLICK ON THE "FIND IT" BUTTON IN YOUR RESULTS (SEE BELOW) TO LINK TO FULL TEXT.
  •   When examining your results, click on The "Find it" button is the key to accessing full-text articles through the library's subscriptions.
  • Look for "Full text available via..."  and click on the link.

  • If there is no "Full text available via..." link, click on VUCat.  Look for the volume and year you need on the holdings record.
  • If you do not see the volume and year you need, or if you get the message "Your search resulted in no hits," then click on the ILLiad link to place an interlibrary loan request. ALLOW AT LEAST 10 DAYS.
