EXCAVATIONS PROBE EARLY AUGUSTINIAN HISTORY
NEWS FLASH: LIBRARY AUTOMATION MOVES TOWARD THE MILLENNIUM:
By Michael Foight
As the 1997-1998 school year commences, Falvey Memorial launches FLASH (Falvey
Library Academic Search), a new automated library system that places Villanova
at the cutting
edge of library technology and information services. Developed by the Endeavor
Corporation,
FLASH replaces the now outdated GEAC System. Unlike earlier automation models,
FLASH
integrates finding aids, cataloging, acquisitions, and circulation in a way that
better facilitates
communication among library departments and enhances reference service. In addition to
fulfilling current requirements of the university community, FLASH holds the promise of an
exciting and expanded range of services to both the patron population and library
professionals.
FLASH provides a variety of new services to the patron. Students and professors will
gain greater access to information through the system; not only will patrons be
able to locate
traditional materials such as monographs and periodicals, they will also be able
to search full
text articles, abstracts, and citations from a host of databases, including ERIC,
Medline, and
ABI/ProQuest. In an integrated system, electronic journal access merges with online resources,
such as government documents, and provides information seekers with immediate
access to
information that was previously unavailable.
FLASH is conveniently linked to Falvey Library's homepage (www.villanova.edu/library)
on
the World Wide Web and provides patrons with remote access to the library holdings and
services. Patrons can browse through the library catalog as well as view their
own circulation
records using the identification number on their new Wildcard. The new VUCAT on
line public
access catalog (OPAC) will offer immediate access to titles on order as well as
current holdings.
With the implementation of the acquisition module of FLASH scheduled to take
place in 1998,
information on titles on order will be listed in the catalog, enhancing patron
knowledge of
important prospective acquisitions. VUCAT will also include useful hypertext
links to journals,
providing instant access to full text articles.
FLASH offers networked connections to other university catalogs including
Rosemont
College, West Chester University, and the University of Pennsylvania. The new
system also
provides greater visibility to Falvey's rare and unique special collections,
such as Irish studies,
Irish-American history, and Augustiniana, to scholars around the world. In an
age of
information, FLASH distinguishes Falvey Memorial Library as a leader in the
academic library
community by integrating the library system in way that will create more
effective and efficient
service for the Villanova community and beyond.
NEWS FLASH: LIBRARY AUTOMATION MOVES TOWARD THE MILLENNIUM:
By Dr. James L. Mullins
FLASH is here! FLASH (Falvey Library Academic SearcH) is the name of our
new integrated online system that provides access to VUCAT (our digital catalog of
Falvey's
holdings), remote databases and electronic journals subscribed to by Falvey,
digital catalogs of
other libraries, and selected Web sites.
FLASH is a major part of the Falvey Library Homepage. The library's home
page and
FLASH can be accessed directly through the Web via Netscape under the URL:
http://www.villanova.edu/library or from the Villanova University homepage: click
on Academics,
and then click on Falvey Memorial Library. This will bring up the
library's homepage which has
FLASH prominently displayed. (Important: you must have Netscape version 3.0 or
later to view
the Falvey homepage. Contact UNIT for more information about obtaining this
upgrade.)
From the library's home page/FLASH you can connect easily to VUCAT. The first
search screen that will appear after connecting to VUCAT will be "Basic Search",
the familiar
Author, Title, Journal Title, Subject or Call Number. You can also perform a key
word search
in "Any Word(s)." There are two Boolean search capabilities and an option to
search "Course
Reserve" (in development). Help screens explain the various search capabilities.
Further developments will occur during the next year, including media
management,
book order, and journal receipt status. FLASH uses software developed by
Endeavor
Information Systems, Inc. -- the same software chosen by the University of
Pennsylvania and
Northwestern University.
We hope that you will find FLASH easy to use and helpful in conducting
your
research.
The following points will help you locate and become acclimated to FLASH:
1. Campus Access: any office, lab, or residence hall connection with
Netscape as
a browser (or any Web browser) and access to the Web.
2. Off-Campus Access: various databases that are subscriptions paid by Falvey
must be transmitted through a Villanova IP address. Going through
America OnLine or Prodigy will not allow access to our paid databases
However, by subscribing to the Remote Web Access being offered
through UNIT, a search can be made from home to access these databases .
Contact UNIT for further information. VUCAT and some other resources
on FLASH are accessible through any of the general providers with a Web
browser.
3. Library Access: within Falvey, Windows searching will be available. The
Windows search allows for "fine-tuning" the search more easily than
through the Web browser. However, the Web browser will also be
available within the library for those who prefer it.
4. Databases: many of the databases that were previously available on the
LAN
within the library are now available through FLASH and the Web.
However, a few do not have a Web version and must remain on Falvey's
Local Area Network (LAN). These include: Catholic Periodicals Index,
Religion Index, America: History & Life, Historical Abstracts,
Philosopher's Index, and a few others. Presently these can be
accessed in
the same method that they have always been.
We are pleased to be able to bring this new service up for this semester.
It took a major
effort on the part of the library staff with support from UNIT, Facilities
Management, and
Purchasing. Our old computer system was on its last leg, and last week the link
to the campus
network was lost.
It is not possible to describe all of the search capabilities and resources
available through FLASH in this article. Please explore FLASH on your own. If
you have
questions, please call the Reference Desk, at 9-4273. If you have comments or
suggestions, please address them to the Library Director, Dr. James L. Mullins,
by e-mail,
jmullins@email.vill.edu, or by phone, 610/519-4290.
FROM THE DIRECTOR...
As libraries are changing everywhere, Falvey Library is also changing. The
integration of
new technology within the library has expanded access to information resources
and enhanced
the services offered by us to you.
"FLASH -- Falvey Library Academic SearcH" is the name of our new integrated
online
system. FLASH will allow a unified approach to many of the resources and services of Falvey.
During the summer, the library staff (with support from UNIT and Facilities)
implemented new
software to access our online public catalog, VUCAT, as well as to bring up
circulation and
cataloging. During 1997/98, we will bring online our acquisitions and serials
records.
FLASH will also allow easy access to remote databases, library catalogs, and selected
Web locations. New furniture and equipment were installed in the Reference area
to create a
"friendlier" user environment.
Two search methods will be available to access "FLASH." Within Falvey
itself, a
Windows 95 application will be available. Outside Falvey, on campus, and through
the Web, a
browser will provide access to FLASH, at the same URL as our present home page
(http://www.villanova.edu/library). Please try it!
During 1997/98 we will use FLASH to bring you new services and resources. FLASH's
flexibility allows for easier modifications and refinements than our old system. Look for
developments in media scheduling and reserve room support and access. Off campus access to
the resources provided by Falvey will be facilitated by UNIT's new Web Access
Service. By
using UNIT's Web server, you will be able to access databases subscribed to by
Falvey from
your home.
We are also working with the Colleges to come up with a structure for
instructing
Villanova students in information literacy to support their learning at
Villanova and their lifelong
learning.
To augment our print resources, several new full text databases will be
added to our
resources. These include Patrologia Latina, Policy File, Ethnic NewsWatch,
Literature Online
(LION), ABI/Inform (full text & image), and WilsonSelect through OCLC's
FirstSearch.
Last spring, to speed up receipt of new books, we added an approval plan.
Books are now
received weekly in Technical Services that meet the profile derived by the
faculty. This insures
that the library will add titles in a timely manner and not risk the title
going "out of print." Each
week you may peruse and select new titles in your discipline and reserve those
that capture your
interest.
An area in Reference has been dedicated to displaying new books before they
are shelved
in the stacks. Look for the "New Books" sign.
Several renovation projects were completed over the summer. The Kolmer
Group Study
Rooms have been added to the third and fourth floors of the library. These room
are available to
students collaborating on projects. Soon connections will be provided to access
the university
network through notebook computers. Also, Instructional Media Services completed
renovation
of the three media viewing rooms on the ground floor.
To highlight the changes in Falvey, please join us on October 22, at 1:00
p.m. for the
formal ribbon cutting ceremony that will mark the advent of FLASH.
As always we welcome your suggestions and comments. We are committed to
meeting your information needs. You determine our priorities.

Louise Green receives "Distinguished Service Award":
By Jacqueline Mirabile
During the convocation on St. Thomas of Villanova Day, Louise Green, Falvey
Library's Assistant Director for Public Services and Head of the Reference
Department,
received the Distinguished Service Award. Service to members of the Villanova
University
community in the most efficient manner has been her constant goal.
Over the years Louise has provided information to faculty, staff, and
students by
answering specific questions and also by selecting the most appropriate
reference materials in
both print and electronic format. Many of our telephone queries at the
Reference Desk are
actually addressed to Louise because she is well known on campus. And she is
the person most
faculty contact when they have problems accessing library resources from their
office.
Furthermore, Louise has recognized the need for students to acquire
competence in the
use of library and information gathering skills, not only for their courses but
also to enable
them to be life long learners. Louise has been a strong advocate for the use of
computer
technology when appropriate. As early as 1980 she initiated online searching of
commercial
databases.
As the technology advanced, she ordered subject indexes on CD-ROM so that
students
and faculty could do computerized searches in the library without paying the
online fee. She
arranged for a LAN (Local Area Network) so that more than one person could use
an index at
the same time, and later she was instrumental in providing access to these
resources from
dormitories and campus offices. Now the library provides access to more than 20
databases
covering numerous subjects. In addition, the Griffin Instruction Room with its
14 terminals
and an instruction workstation was designed primarily by Louise.
Louise continues to promote computerized resources which have become the
most
heavily-used materials in the library. Through her work on the library's System
Council
Louise has been very involved in the process of selecting and implementing the
library's new
online system.
In 1982/83 Louise took responsibility for the daily operation of the
library during the
lengthy absence (due to illness) of Mary Jane Kuhn, then acting director. At
the untimely death
of Mary Ann Griffin in 1995, Louise was asked to serve as acting director. She
ensured the
functioning of the library with a staff of 80 full-time and part-time employees
and elicited the
full support of the staff as she brought to fruition many of Dr. Griffin's plans. She sought to
encourage the staff to continue to provide a high level of service to the
Villanova community
while the search for a new director took place.
Louise has served on numerous campus committees, including the Academic
Information Technology Planning Committee, the Subcommittee on Information
Networking as
part of Villanova's Information Technology Steering Council, the Middle States
Self-Study
Library Committee, Sesquicentennial Committee on Historical Exhibits/Projects,
SuperUsers
(UNIT test group), and the Faculty Recruitment and Retention/Multicultural
Diversity
Committee.
Louise began her association with Falvey Library in 1966 as a part-time
reference
librarian and assumed full-time responsibilities in 1974.
In 1991 the Vice President of Academic Affairs approved a ranking system
for the
professional staff which ranged from Library Professional I to Library
Professional IV. The
criteria are similar to those for the Distinguished Service Award but also
require service
outside Villanova University. Louise's accomplishments were acknowledged, and
she was
accorded the top rank, Library Professional IV.
The Villanova community has been fortunate in being the beneficiary of
Louise's
dedication to expanding the information world to faculty, students, and staff.
KOLMER GROUP STUDY ROOMS OPEN FOR COLLABORATIVE STUDY
The Kolmer Group Study Rooms on the third and fourth floors of the library
are available
for students working on collaborative projects. These rooms will soon be wired
to provide
connectivity to the university network. Through a gift from the Kolmer family,
the two old study
lounges were recently renovated. With new walls, windows, and furniture, they
were transformed
into six attractive group study areas.
Students may obtain keys for the rooms at the Circulation desk.
The Kolmer family has had a long association with Villanova University.
John H.
Kolmer, Jr., who currently serves on the university's Board of Trustees, and
Nora, his wife,
funded the renovation to honor the memory of their son.
John H. Kolmer III (1969 - 1996) graduated from Villanova University in
1992 with a
B.S. in Business Administration, majoring in Finance, and was pursuing a Master's degree in
English at the time of his death. His personal literature collection, especially strong in the area of
contemporary fiction, was also bequeathed to Falvey Library.
NEW FACES IN FALVEY...
David Burke assumed the position of Serials Cataloger in April. With the
recent
emphasis on electronic journals, David will be responding to this new dimension
of information
storage and retrieval. David, an Honors / English major while at Villanova,
received his M.L.S.
from Drexel University. Previous stints included the State Library of
Pennsylvania and the
Historical Society of Pennsylvania. Most recently he worked on a project with
the Smithsonian's
National Museum of American Art, creating a database of the country's outdoor
sculpture.
Michael Foight recently took on the full-time, permanent position of
Reference
Librarian, Electronic Resources / Special Collections Cataloger. Karl Bauer
joined Instructional
Media Services as Graphic Artist.
Also joining the Falvey Library staff are James Martin, Jr., Supervisor,
Bound Stacks, Periodical Department, Joseph Brangiel, Library Assistant in the Reserve Room,
who is a
graduate student in History, and Catherine McGowan, Library Assistant in the
Interlibrary Loan
Department, who formerly worked at the Radnor Public Library.
"SAILING THE INTERNET" CLASSES HELD MONTHLY
Informal walk-in classes on "sailing the Internet" will be offered on a regualar basis this semester. Michael Foight, Reference / Electronic Resources Librarian, will be teaching these sessions to any interested member of the Villanova University community. The Griffin Instruction Room, second floor, Falvey Library, has numerous workstations to enable participants to practice their 'sailing' techniques.
The monthly sessions are scheduled for Wednesday mornings, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, and Thursday evenings, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., on September 24 and 25, and October 22 and 23. Future workshop dates will be announced.
"TIMES, THEY ARE A CHANGIN'": AN UPDATE ON CIRCULATION
POLICIES:
By Luisa Cywinski
Our Circulation policies are changing with the times. Beginning with the
installation of
our new integrated library system, the policy on circulating books will be
somewhat modified
for Villanova faculty. Faculty may borrow up to 100 items from the circulating
collection.
Rather than a fixed end of term due date, books obtained from the main stacks
will circulate to
faculty for 120 days from the date checked out. Items may be renewed once, by
phone or at
the Circulation Desk, for an additional 120 days.
As a convenience, the library will distribute, to each academic department,
a supply of
pre-addressed library book return envelopes.
If a faculty member would like to retain items beyond the renewal due date,
the items
are to be brought to the Circulation Desk and checked out again.
Popular Reading books will circulate for 20 days and cannot be renewed or
recalled.
We anticipate providing a library proxy card to faculty members for use by
designated
graduate assistants. The proxy card will be an additional ID card attached to
the faculty
member's library account, which will allow graduate assistants to collect and
borrow library
materials in the faculty member's name.
Falvey Library will take advantage of electronic mail and send library
notification via
Oracle e-mail for existing faculty e-mail accounts. Faculty members who do not
have active e-mail accounts will receive notification via campus mail.
Notification of overdue items will be
sent at 7 days, 14 days and then a final notice at 30 days overdue.
After borrowers accumulate more than 10 books that are 30 days overdue they
will not
be able to check out any materials until the overdue items are returned. Once
returned, these
items may be checked out again.
In order to facilitate access to circulating library books, recalls can be
placed on items
that are currently checked out to another borrower. Recall request forms are
available on the
library homepage and at the Circulation Desk. The Falvey Library URL address is
http://www.villanova.edu/library.
A recall will automatically shorten the loan period of borrowed items. A
recall
notification will be sent promptly after the recall is placed, notifying the
current borrower of
the modified due date. Should a recalled item become overdue, the borrower will
not be able
to check out any materials until the recalled item is returned.
For more information, please call Luisa Cywinski at 610/519-4270 or Merrill
Stein at
610/519-4272 or send an e-mail message to
Falvey-Circulation@email.vill.edu.
COURSE RESERVES ENHANCED BY "FLASH":
By Linda Saboe
The Reserve Room officially enters the "technology age," thanks to Falvey
library's new
library system, FLASH (Falvey Library Academic SearcH). Among the many benefits
the new
system will bring is the feature enabling students to access the Reserve
Collection using Falvey's
online catalog, VUCAT. Course Reserves will be cross-referenced by instructor,
department,
course, and section number.
With FLASH we can associate multiple course records with one instructor
and multiple
instructors with a single course. This allows better support for team-taught
courses, such as Core
Humanities seminars and nursing courses.
For the first time, the Reserve Room will be able to electronically charge
out reserved
items to students. FLASH gives us the ability to accurately track usage of
materials, control
access more effectively, and maintain a higher level of security.
The FLASH system is rich and powerful as well as easy to use. Reserve Course
Requests can be processed more efficiently, allowing us to get the material on the
shelves faster than ever
before. For more information contact the Reserve Room at 610/519-4278.

LIAISONS HELP STRENGTHEN LIBRARY COLLECTION:
By Dennis Lambert
The formal liaison arrangement between Falvey Library and the academic
departments
and interdisciplinary programs exists in order to strengthen the library's
collection in these
academic areas. The faculty and librarian liaisons identify collection
development needs, assist
with the selection of materials in all formats, and communicate information
about departmental
and library programs and policies.
Each academic department or interdisciplinary program has a designated
faculty member
(often the chair or director) who serves as the liaison to the library.
The designated librarian liaisons are listed below for your information.

EXCAVATIONS PROBE EARLY AUGUSTINIAN HISTORY
"Medieval Augustinian Excavations in Tuscany," on display in Falvey Library
from
August 27 through December 15, 1997, celebrates the anniversary of Villanova's
archeological
excavations undertaken in Tuscany in the late 70's and in 1984. The digs, which
took place at
the sites of early monasteries of the Augustinian Order, provided valuable data
for resolving
questions surrounding the origins of the Order and its connections to St.
Augustine of Hippo
(354-430).
The exhibition, organized by Rev. Karl Gersbach, O.S.A., and sponsored by
the
Augustinian Historical Institute, with the cooperation of Falvey Memorial
Library, reveals the
effort to unravel the early history of the Augustinian Order.
During the Middle
Ages, hermitages
were established by groups in search of attaining a simpler lifestyle than found
in the Benedictine
monasteries.
Surviving documents of the Tuscan hermitages date from about the
second half of
the eleventh century, so earlier information must necessarily come from
archeological
excavations.
These excavations centered primarily at the Monastery of San Leonardo al
Lago outside
Siena and Santa Lucia at Rosia, both of which showed evidence of prior religious
activity. Also
involved was Lecceto, an active monastery of Augustinian cloistered nuns, which
was studied
because of its close connection to San Leonardo.
The Augustinian Historical Institute, located in Old Falvey Hall, is the
Center for the
Study of the History of the Augustinian Order and maintains a collection of
materials pertaining
to the history of the Order. Father Gersbach serves as the director of the AHI.
For more
information, call 610/519-7590.
